作者简介乔治奥威尔
（George Orwell ，1903～1950），英国人道主义作家、新闻记者、社会评论家、英语文体家。1936年，奥威尔参加西班牙内战，因重伤返回英国。1939年，二战爆发，他积极参加反纳粹的活动。西班牙内战与二战的苦痛经历，让他对战争与和平、极权与民主、社会关怀与人类理想进行了深刻的思考。1945年，乔治奥威尔出版了小说《动物农场》。1949年，他的代表作《1984》问世，产生了深远的影响。由他的名字衍生出的“奥威尔主义”“奥威尔式”等词成为通用词汇而被广泛使用。

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston
Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped
quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to
prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.
The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it acoloured
poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply anenormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of about fortyfive, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features. Winston made for the stairs.
It was no use trying the lift. Even at the best of times it was seldom working, and at present the electric current was cut off during daylight hours. It was part of the economy drive in preparation for Hate Week. The flat was seven flights up, and Winston, who was thirtynine and had a varicose ulcer above his right ankle, went slowly, resting several times on the way. On each landing, opposite the liftshaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it ran.
